The UCLA Bands present their final concert of the winter quarter. The UCLA Symphonic Band, led by conductor Dwayne Milburn and graduate conducting students Michael James and Nicholas Junker, opens with American selections by composers Ryan Beard, Robert Jager, John Philip Sousa, and Eric Whitacre. They conclude their portion of the concert with Milburn’s transcription of the Finale from Aleksandr Borodin’s Symphony No. 2. Following a brief intermission, the UCLA Wind Ensemble, conducted by Travis J. Cross, presents a program entitled “Joyful Noises,” with four contemporary American composers reflecting their own cultural heritages: Un Cafecito by Dennis Llinás, March! by Jennifer Jolley, The Songs of Shim-Cheong by Minoo Dixon, and Come Sunday by Omar Thomas.
This performance is made possible by the David and Irmgard Dobrow Fund. Classical music was a passion of the Dobrows, who established a generous endowment at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music to make programs like this possible. We are proud to celebrate this program as part of the 2023-2024 Dobrow Series.
