Professor Elisabeth Le Guin Awarded 2019 Guggenheim Fellowship
Elisabeth Le Guin, chair of the musicology department, was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for a community-project based in Santa Ana, California, called El Cancionero de Santa Ana. The project aims to reflect, translate and enhance the complex cultural life of the largely Mexican immigrant community in which Le Guin has lived since 2014.
Ethnomusicology Graduate Student Wins Prize Presented at Society for Ethnomusicology Conference
Tyler Yamin received a Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize for his paper, “Creativity and Contestation in the Canopy: Reflections on the Material-Discursive Boundaries of Gibbon Song,” read at the 2018 SEMSCHC conference, and awarded at the 2019 conference.
63rd Annual Society for Ethnomusicology Conference Features UCLA Students, Faculty and Alumni
Nearly 50 UCLA students, faculty and alumni participated in the 63rd annual Society for Ethnomusicology Conference. The meeting, the largest of its kind, gathered together 1,000 international ethnomusicologists, musicologists, anthropologists and scholars of sound studies, and featured a series of live music performances.
Research and Scholarly Events Advance Knowledge of Field of American Jewish Music
During the summer of 2018, two graduate student researchers were kept busy by the Lowell Milken Fund for American Jewish Music. One researched composers and their interrelationships across generations. The other focused exclusively on one composer, Max Helfman. 
Mark Waldrep’s Book ‘Music and Audio’ Is An 850-Page Guide To Better Sound
Audio engineer and high-res guru Mark Waldrep, who received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from UCLA, has published an 850-page book called Music and Audio: A User Guide To Better Sound.
