SUMMARY:Firebirth: Kindling the Sounds of Resilience in Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by the sociocultural and economic impacts that the Palisades and Altadena fires of January 2025 had on the greater Los Angeles (LA) area\, Firebirth: Kindling the Sounds of Resilience in Los Angeles will offer a community-oriented space for UCLA students\, faculty\, staff\, and residents of the surrounding area to critically reflect on the sounds of LA after such fires. The event will also act as a site of education and healing prompted by hearing from those who study and engage with fire ecology. This event will center around a new composition for violin and piano\, Firebirth\, composed by Will Rand (b. 1999). Firebirth is a part of a commission project entitled “Resilience Sounds” intended to explore the relationship between music\, the natural world\, and communities within it. Composer Will Rand and violinist Grace M. Alexander will offer this work as a performance and be present to discuss their experiences and perspectives on this composition. Alongside the performance will be a discussion of fire ecology\, safety and community (re)building after the devastation of the LA fires framed by perspectives solicited from government employees for the City of Los Angeles and graduate students from UCLA in musicology and environmental science or ecology\, including a talk by Michele Yamamoto who recently gave a paper on this at the 2025 American Musicological Society Annual Meeting. This event will also be taped live for a podcast episode for the organization\, EarthStory\, which seeks to raise awareness of the interconnections between living beings through ecologically-inspired storytelling\, song and communal gathering. Ultimately\, it is the goal of this project to incorporate interdisciplinary modes of thinking\, visual and performing arts\, and multiple modalities of presentation and community-based teaching in order to foster a space of action\, healing\, and reflection for the broader Los Angeles community. \nThis program offers a forum for a public discussion/engagement surrounding the recent wildfires in Los Angeles that centers creative practice at all levels. “Firebirth” itself was inspired by indigenous cultural fire practices\, and through this event\, also serves as a point of inspiration for living composers and artists. The piece invites the audience to consider their own relationship with fire and offers a study on how music can be a conduit between ecological understandings of fire and humankind’s lived experience with fire that threatens life. Music offers a way for people to gather to reflect on their shared experiences and process difficult moments in life. It also offers audiences a chance to reconsider how they want to relate with these difficult experiences moving forward. Ultimately\, this offers a space for listening\, reflection\, and new sounding practices for a community deeply impacted by wildfire. \nVisit the website for the latest information about the event schedule: https://www.firebirthla.com/ \n Presenting Partners\nThis event is made possible by our generous presenting partners\, the UCLA Walter H. Rubsamen Music Library\, Davise Fund; the Center for Musical Humanities at UCLA; and the Society for American Music (SAM) as part of their Sounding the Nation at 250 initiative. \nThis program is made possible by the Joyce S. and Robert U. Nelson Fund. Robert Uriel Nelson was a revered musicologist and music professor at UCLA\, who\, together with his wife\, established a generous endowment for the university to make programs like this possible. \nPhoto credit: Mural by wemok_art // Photo by Michele Yamamoto

SUMMARY:Music of Korea and Intercultural Improvisation Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Student ensembles will share the stage to feature the music of Korea\, and our Intercultural Improvisation Ensemble. \nThis concert brings together performances from the Music of Korea and Intercultural Improvisation: Cultures in Musical Dialogue ensembles directed by Dr. Gamin Kang\, celebrating Korea’s rich musical heritage alongside cross-cultural creative practice. The program features traditional and contemporary works shaped by both historical roots and collaborative experimentation\, with students performing on a diverse range of Korean instruments including gayageum (12-string zither)\, janggu (hourglass drum)\, danso (bamboo flute)\, as well as cross-cultural music ensemble. Repertoire includes beloved folk songs such as Arirang and Doraji\, vibrant percussive traditions like Samulnori\, and newly devised pieces created through an improvisation-based process. Embracing both tradition and innovation\, the beauty of traditional folk music and cross-cultural creativity come together to shape each work organically\, resulting in a dynamic musical dialogue and shared creativity across cultures. \nThe 66th Annual Spring Festival of World Music\nContinuing a tradition begun in 1960\, the Department of Ethnomusicology draws on its incredible collection of world musical instruments to present its annual Spring Festival of World Music. It’s an opportunity for student ensembles to perform and share traditional musics from around the world as they master their instruments. The 2026 festival concert dates run from April 26th to June 3rd. The festival is free and open to the public. All concerts are in Schoenberg Hall and Lani Hall. SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture Series with LaVerne David C. de la Peña
DESCRIPTION:Listening Back: Community and the Life of Archival Sound \nThis talk examines how archival sound recordings can reenter cultural life when they are returned to the communities from which they originate. Drawing on work at the University of the Philippines Center for Ethnomusicology and the Sagada Community Archives Initiative in the northern Cordillera region\, the presentation reflects on listening as a collaborative practice between archives and communities. Rather than treating recordings as objects preserved primarily for scholarly analysis\, the project explores what happens when communities listen again to recordings of their own musical past. Collective listening sessions revealed how memories\, relationships\, and local knowledge reshape the meaning of archival materials. Over time\, these encounters led to the establishment of a small community archive at St. Mary’s School of Sagada\, where decisions about organization\, interpretation\, and access are guided by community priorities. The talk argues that sound heritage is sustained not only through technical preservation\, but through relationships that allow recordings to continue participating in cultural life \nLaVerne David C. de la Peña is the former Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Music and former Director of the UP Center for Ethnomusicology. He also served as Vice Chair of the UNESCO National Memory of the World Committee\, contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage through archival and documentation initiatives. Following his retirement\, Dr. de la Peña continues to serve as a professorial lecturer at the University of the Philippines\, where he teaches courses in ethnomusicology and musicology. In Spring 2026\, he joined the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa as the inaugural recipient of the Trimillos Visiting Distinguished Professorship in Ethnomusicology\, a post honoring the legacy of Dr. Ricardo Trimillos. Dr. de la Peña holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Composition from the University of the Philippines

SUMMARY:Opera UCLA - Gluck's Iphigenie en Tauride
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an innovative new production of Iphigénie en Tauride for the Opera UCLA ensemble featuring students from voice and opera. \nIphigénie en Tauride follows the cursed House of Atreus in ancient Greece. Spared from sacrifice by the goddess Artemis\, Iphigénie is carried to Tauris\, where she serves as a priestess among a people who sacrifice to Artemis any Greek who lands on their shores. When Iphigénie’s brother Orestes arrives\, the tragedy deepens: she does not recognize him—believing him to be long dead—and prepares to sacrifice him. \nWelcome as guest artist the rising acclaimed young conductor Stefano Flavoni\, on leave from the Hamburg State Opera to debut with Opera UCLA as music director snd conductor. \nThis event is free and open to the public. This production will not be livestreamed. However\, it will be filmed\, and a cinematic version will be made available to the public at a future date. \nADVISORY: The production contains mature themes (violence\, murder\, assault) and strobe-like lighting effects that may be intense for photo-sensitive audience members.

SUMMARY:Music of India & African American Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Student ensembles will share the stage to feature Music of India & African American Music Ensemble. \nThe Music of India focus on the performance of Indian classical music on the sitar and tabla. The ensemble performs compositions of North Indian classical ragas (harmonic modes) and talas (rhythmic patterns on tabla). Ragas are melodies that unfold and develop\, imparting a particular mood and array of feeling. The ensemble is comprised of the students of Rahul Neuman on sitar and the students of Abhiman Kaushal on tabla. \nThe African American Music Ensemble performs a diverse range of vocal repertoire including spirituals\, gospel\, freedom/Civil Rights songs\, and other works by African-Diasporic composers\, including anthems\, hymn arrangements\, and various forms of contemporary choral music. We look forward to welcoming you to The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music for our storied Spring Festival of World Music. Click Here to Learn More about the Festival
