Michael Hayden

  Lecturer -- Music Education




Adopted from a Greek orphanage, Michael Hayden grew up in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.  His received his Bachelor of Music Education from Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana and his Masters in Choral Conducting from The Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York. At Michigan State University he completed all coursework, examinations and recitals for the DMA in Choral Conducting, ABD. 

Currently, Mr. Hayden is in his eleventh year at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach where he is Director of Choirs.  He conducts four choirs and two after school a cappella groups. His choirs have been recognized locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and have toured to Greece, England and France, Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland, singing in such venues as Notre Dame CathedralChartres Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Oxford Christchurch CathedralGrosvenor Chapel, St. Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle, Cologne Cathedral, Abbey of Hildegarde von Bingen, and Strasbourg Cathedral.

In 2012, Vocal Ensemble was selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Western Division Conference in Reno, Nevada and that same week performed in Carnegie Hall, as part of the of Worldstrides National Youth Festival Honor Choir. In March of 2015 Vocal Ensemble was selected as one of three high school choir SATB ensembles to perform at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In October of 2015 Mr. Hayden traveled to Beijing, China to teach for the International Training Program at the Beijing Institute of Education, Chaoyang Branch.  Working with forty music teachers, Mr. Hayden brought his unique energy and extensive knowledge helping the teachers to be more affective in the classroom.

In 2014, Mr. Hayden was named a California Teacher of the Year. And also in 2014 the Mira Costa High School Music Department was awarded a 2014 GRAMMY Gold Signature School Award, one of three given to high schools in America for their excellence in band, choir and orchestra.
