Mark Kligman, Mickey Katz Endowed Chair in Jewish Music

Mark Kligman specializes in the liturgical traditions of Middle Eastern Jewish communities and various areas of popular Jewish music.  He has published on the liturgical music of Syrian Jews in Brooklyn in journals as well as his book, Maqām and Liturgy: Ritual, Music and Aesthetics of Syrian Jews in Brooklyn (Wayne State University, 2009), which shows the interconnection between the music of Syrian Jews and their cultural way of life.  His other publications focus on the intersection of contemporary Jewish life and various liturgical and paraliturgical musical contexts.  He is the academic Chair of the Jewish Music Forum and co-editor of the journal Musica Judaica.  He is also on the board of the Association for Jewish Studies.

Lorry Black 

Dr. Lorry Black is the Associate Director of the Lowell Milken Fund for American Jewish Music at UCLA and a percussionist, pedagogue, and Jewish music specialist. Deeply rooted in the Los Angeles performance scene, Black has performed with various orchestras, including the Golden State Pops Orchestra, Santa Monica Symphony, The Jacaranda Music Ensemble, and Torrance Symphony and choral, and is the percussionist with the Helix Collective, a Los Angeles based new music ensemble. As a freelance performer in Los Angeles, he has had the privilege to perform under the baton of many great conductors including John Williams, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, and James Conlon, as well as recording for various artists. Active in the Jewish community, he is readily found performing in synagogues as a conductor and percussionist, often arranging the works as well. Black is a graduate of the DMA program in Sacred Music from the USC Thornton School of Music where he specialized in Jewish music and music of the Holocaust. Previous degrees include a bachelor of arts degree from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and a master of music in orchestral percussion from USC. His current line of research follows the role non-governmental organizations played in the construction of a cultural scene in the French concentration camps.

Lillian M. Wohl


As a specialist of Jewish music working primarily in Latin America and the United States, Dr. Wohl’s research addresses trans-Atlantic and hemispheric circulations of music and musicians since the 19th century along the axes of both history and memory. She has conducted archival and ethnographic research in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and the U.S. and writes about the performance of racial, ethnic, and religious difference in modern musical social worlds of the Jewish Diaspora.

She is currently working on her first book, From Memory: Music, Temporality, and the Performance of the Past in Jewish Buenos Aires, which considers a musical aesthetics of temporality as a framework for examining locality emerging in the urban sound worlds of commemoration and the cultures of memory in Buenos Aires, Argentina since the 1990s.

Dr. Wohl is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Center for Jewish History, the Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Franke Institute for the Humanities at the University of Chicago, and the Duke Center for Jewish Studies and Duke University Libraries. She has published in AJS Perspectives, H-Judaic Book Reviews, and has contributed two essays to edited volumes published by Brill.

From 2015–2017, Dr. Wohl served as the co-Chair of the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Jewish Music Special Interest Group, is currently on the Board of the American Musicological Society’s Jewish Studies and Music Study Group, and was Executive Director of the Jewish Music Forum, a project of the American Society for Jewish Music (2015–2017). She was Visiting Assistant Professor of Jewish Musicology and Ethnomusicology at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (2014–2017). Dr. Wohl completed a B.A. in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University prior to completing her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at the University of Chicago.

Jeff Janeczko


Jeff Janeczko is the Curator and Chief Operating Officer of the Milken Archive of Jewish Music, a project of the Milken Family Foundation devoted to the preservation and dissemination of music of the American Jewish experience. He holds Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and B.A. in music from the Metropolitan State College (now University) of Denver. His publications include “A Tale of Four Diasporas: Case Studies on the Relevance of ‘Diaspora’ in Contemporary American Jewish Music” in Perspectives on Jewish Music: Sacred and Secular, edited by Jonathan L. Friedmann (Lexington Books, 2009), and "Negotiating Boundaries: Musical Hybridity in Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture Series" which appears in the Annual Review of the Casden Institute for the Jewish Role in American Life (Purdue University Press, 2011), edited by Josh Kun. He is currently writing an essay for Beyond the Field: New Challenges and Opportunities in Ethnomusicology, edited by Leon Garcia Corona and Kathleen Wiens (Oxford University Press, Forthcoming).
