Course Description

This weeklong summer jazz intensive connects high school musicians ages 14-18 to a vibrant community of artists led by UCLA faculty and current fellows at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA. Collaborative classes and lessons are designed around each student’s needs, with an emphasis on progressive models of jazz performance. Each student will engage with composition and ensemble projects, with instrumentation determined by the workshop participants. A performance by student musicians will conclude the intensive experience.

On Campus Session A: July 28-August 1
On Campus Session B: August 4-8

Course Description

This week-long intensive for high school students ages 14-18 introduces the real-world experiences foundational to the music industry, connecting those to practical and theoretical frameworks to familiarize students with what it takes to be leaders. We’ll examine the inner workings of the music industry, considering economic, political, social and material perspectives. Throughout the course, students will collaborate, culminating in an industry related group project of their choice that will be showcased and reviewed by industry professionals.

ONLINE Session B: August 11-15

Course Description

Learn the fundamentals of songwriting in a one-week intensive experience for high school songwriters ages 14-18. UCLA faculty and special guests will work with attendees to explore song structure and purpose, approaches to writing, the importance of collaboration, and the professional expectations of today’s music industry. A showcase of original songs created, refined and performed by student attendees will cap the experience, performed live at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and livestreamed on our channel.

Course Description

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Summer Voice Intensive offers a concentrated week-long study experience for high school vocalists ages 14 to 18. Through daily group and individual instruction in vocal technique, repertoire development and coaching, body awareness & strengthening, vocal diction, performance style & techniques, ensemble work, and college audition prep, this program focuses on cultivating musical practices and balanced approaches for a transformational vocal experience. A showcase of student performances performed live at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music (and livestreamed on our channel) caps the experience.
