Bach in the Serra

classical
Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden

Professor Antonio Lysy, Cello Performance and Strings Area Head, performs the cycle of Bach Suites for solo cello for revolving audience, within an informal and openly accessible, walk-through setting, near the warmly resonant Richard Serra T.E.U.C.L.A. sculpture, in the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden.

A few chairs will be placed inside the sculpture, but everyone will get a chance to enter. A revolving 'walk-in-and-out' audience can be seated for a few minutes at a time, for a Prelude, or a couple of dance movements, or even a whole Suite if they wish. A volunteer will help usher people in and out to keep things flowing. Or you may prefer to take in the music from outside, sitting on the grass and benches of the inspirational sculpture garden. I will be connected to a mic for the concert to be emitted on speakers placed around the garden.

This evening's program includes:

  • Cello Suite No.1 in G major, BWV 1007
  • Cello Suite No.2 in D minor, BWV 1008
  • Cello Suite No.3 in C major, BWV 1009
  • Cello Suite No. 4 in E♭major, BWV 1010
  • Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011
  • Cello Suite No. 6 in D major, BWV 1012

This event is made possible by the David and Irmgard Dobrow Fund. Classical music was a passion of the Dobrows, who established a generous endowment at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music to make programs like this possible. We are proud to celebrate this program as part of the 2022 - 23 Dobrow Series.
