An Ethnomusicologist among Diplomats: How My Ethnomusicology Background Shapes My Cultural Work in a Diplomatic Setting

Lecture by Liv Lande
Senior Adviser, Culture and Information Section, Embassy of Japan in Norway

Liv Lande will talk about her work experience outside academia, where she combines her background in ethnomusicology with in-depth expertise in Japanese language and culture. In a diplomatic setting, she mainly works with cultural exchange and dissemination of Japanese art and culture to a Norwegian audience. The lecture explores how her ethnomusicological background shapes her approach to the content of the work and to its underlying purposes and concepts, providing critical wider perspectives. Moreover, the position allows for a certain degree of freedom to create or form assignments in one’s own way. This gives opportunities to draw on her training in ethnomusicology, including aspects such as music ethnography, academic writing, and musical performance skills.

Liv Lande is senior adviser in cultural affairs at the embassy of Japan in Norway. She also holds regular lectures in world music education at Oslo Metropolitan University. Liv earned her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from UCLA in 2007, with her dissertation “Innovating Musical Tradition in Japan: Negotiating Transmission, Identity, and Creativity in the Sawai Koto School.” Liv was born in Japan and spent her childhood years there, before moving to her parents’ home country of Norway. While studying for her Master’s degree in Kyoto, Japan, she received performance lessons on the koto.

Part of the Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy Colloquium Series, this event is sponsored by The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Department of Ethnomusicology
