The UCLA Wind Ensemble presents its second concert of fall quarter, joined by special alumni guests Fivemind Reeds. Formed in 2021 at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Fivemind has since performed in several concerts and recitals throughout Los Angeles and the United States and was a two-time ensemble in residence for Interlochen Public Radio’s Sound Garden Project. Fivemind opens the program with selections by Clara Schumann, Charles Ives, and David Biedenbender.
The UCLA Wind Ensemble performs two cornerstone works by composers born in 1874—an encore presentation of Arnold Schonberg’s Theme and Variations, Op. 43b, and Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat, generally considered the first serious work for concert band by a major composer. The second half of the concert also includes transcriptions of Leonard Bernstein’s Slava! (subtitled “A Political Overture”) and Eric Whitacre’s lush choral work Sleep.
This performance is made possible by the David and Irmgard Dobrow Fund. Classical music was a passion of the Dobrows, who established a generous endowment at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music to make programs like this possible. We are proud to celebrate this program as part of the 2024-2025 Dobrow Series.
