This newly digitized compact disc features UCLA’s Javanese gamelan Khjai Mendung (Venerable Dark Cloud) and is the first stereophonic recording available of the large gamelan orchestral tradition of Central Java. All the tracks were performed by UCLA students. Recorded by Columbia Masterworks, the album was originally released as a long-play record in 1973 by the UCLA Institute of Ethnomusicology with the title Music of the Venerable Dark Cloud (IE Records IER-7501).
