The African collection is our largest instrument collection, with 83 pieces. Many of the instruments in this collection are drums, such as the Ghanaian atumpan and Nigerian talking drum, which are played in the Music of West Africa Ensemble class. The collection also includes mbira, wooden xylophones, and fiddles. The atumpan drums were restored to playable condition in 2018 and recently featured in concert performance. These drums will be used again as part of a special performance and conference that will take place on January 11, 2019.
