Musicology

Graduate Student Resources

We define music broadly, recognizing it as text, sound, communication, social structures, and material practices, and approach musicology as a humanistic endeavor that integrates cultural theory and analysis, historiography, ontology, epistemology, hermeneutics, ethnography, and creative practices. Central to this mission is cultivating a world-class faculty of research scholars and mentoring the next generation of musicologists through the Ph.D. in Musicology as well as undergraduate major and minor programs, all interconnected with Music Industry, Ethnomusicology, Performance, Composition, and Music Education. The department’s wide-ranging curriculum spans early music to contemporary styles such as blues, Motown, musical theater, opera, film music, rock, punk, and EDM, while also addressing music’s intersections with politics, gender, identity, race and ethnic studies, trauma studies, disability studies, voice studies, data science, and sound studies. These perspectives are advanced through research centers, conferences, lectureships, student publications, community engagement, and performance opportunities, including the Early Music Ensemble and collaborations across the Herb Alpert School of Music.
