Welcome Back 2023

3 min read

Balmy temperatures and plenty of sunshine welcomed School of Music students back to Schoenberg Music Building and the start of a new year. And it promises to be a banner year. The School of Music is growing, with more students than ever before. State-of-the-art practice rooms are due to be completed soon. And this fall, the school launched its Music Industry BA as its own interdisciplinary program.

The official welcome

The School of Music’s staff, student advisory board, and inaugural dean Eileen Strempel kicked off the welcome in Schoenberg Hall.

Dean Eileen Strempel welcomes all students to The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music
Alex Echevarria, the director of operations, talks about the ins-and-outs of practice rooms, lockers, and building operations.
Adam Fox, the director of student affairs, reminds students that each of them has a story worth sharing
Dalton Mumphrey and Ashley Dao talked about the need for an active Student Advisory Board

The Breakout Sessions

After the general welcome, students then proceeded to breakout sessions for their majors. Department chairs and faculty greeted them and talked through plans for the coming year. Then everyone retired to the courtyard to catch up over pizza.

In-N-Out Social

The Office of Student Affairs followed up on Friday with a special lunch for School of Music students–In-N-Out in North Dickson Court. (And yes, we were the envy of all the other UCLA students that day.)
