This week-long intensive program focuses on learning about and experiencing musical sounds and cultures from around the globe. Students will gain hands-on experience with world musical instruments from around the world, using the instruments in our special collections at UCLA. Students will gain an understanding of music and its cultural context and performances perspectives, investigating music cultures from Java, Bali, Thailand, Korea, China, India, Africa, Afro-Cuban, Brazil, Latin America, Iran, and Armenia.

Our instructors include experts in the field, Ph.D candidates, and international artists. In-person class sessions will include lectures, demonstrations on musical instruments by master musicians, and hands-on workshops in music-making. This geographically-based survey looks at traditional musics, musical instrument design and ensemble composition, musical notations and music theory. Interactive workshops include learning how to play diverse musical instruments from around the globe, singing songs in multiple languages and learning traditional beliefs related to music and dance.
