Promoting the heritage of
Armenian folk music

The Armenian Music Ensemble, under the directorship of ethnomusicologist Armen Adamian, focuses on the study and performance of Armenian traditional musical styles and repertoires. The ensemble is supported by the Armenian Music Program’s mentor-student fellowship program. Each academic year, a group of UCLA students and alumni are provided with the opportunity of working with distinguished musicians from the local Armenian community. Past and present mentors include Hasmik Harutyunyan for voice, Vardan Baghdasaryan for kamancha, Antranig Kzirian for oud, Emmanuel Hovannisyan, for duduk, and Armen Adamian for duduk and shvi.

Student Testimonials
Mickey Hashim
Prior to taking the Armenian Music class on a whim, I had known almost nothing about Armenia. Learning its oral tradition and the rich cultural tapestry that informs the repertoire we perform has changed my understanding of how music can exist fluidly and dynamically beyond notation and music’s unifying power that connects communities worldwide. For any non-Armenians interested in the program, it is an incredible opportunity to be immersed in the intricacies of this fascinating musical tradition while exploring your instrument in meticulous detail.

To anyone considering joining, I would say it's a unique and invaluable opportunity to immerse yourself in a rich cultural tradition while developing your musical talents.
Hayk Gargaloyan
I am incredibly grateful to the Armenian Music Program for giving me an opportunity to connect more deeply with my culture and develop my musical skills. Although I am not a music major, this has definitely been my most rewarding experience at UCLA!
