Welcome

Congratulations on making it to final round auditions and/or interviews at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music!

We are excited to welcome you to the final round of the admissions process for The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Each area conducts the final round of their process a bit differently; please read this page thoroughly in order to ensure you know what is required of you.

If you have any questions after thoroughly reading this page, please reach out to admissions@schoolofmusic.ucla.edu.

What to Expect in the Final Round

Musicology BA

All interviews for Musicology will be held remotely via Acceptd’s AuditionRoom software, which utilizes Zoom.

The deadline to schedule your interview time slot is Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 11:59pm PST.

Please note that this interview is a chance for you to speak impromptu with faculty members about the program and your interests. There is nothing you need to prepare in advance.

Please see here for an overview of the AuditionRoom platform so you know what to expect on the day of your remote interview.

Auditions will be held live and in person on campus during the dates/times reflected on the schedule you access via Acceptd. A live rhythm section will be provided to accompany you during your audition. The deadline to schedule your time slot (if you plan to come in person) is Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 11:59pm PST.

If you cannot attend the audition dates listed, please use Acceptd to upload final video recordings of the audition repertoire in lieu of a live audition. You will not be disadvantaged in our process if you choose the remote option. The deadline to upload final video recordings (if you will be completing the final round remotely) is Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 11:59pm PST.

You can find audition repertoire listed here.

As a Music Education finalist, you are required to audition for our studio faculty as well as attend an interview with our Music Education faculty (e.g. this is a two-part process).

Auditions and interviews will be held on campus during the dates/times reflected on the schedule you access via Acceptd. You can find audition repertoire listed here. It is recommended you choose your audition time slot first, then choose a Music Education interview time slot on the same day during a time that does not overlap with your audition time slot. The deadline to schedule your time slots (if you plan to come in person) is Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 11:59pm PST for your audition and your interview.

If you cannot attend auditions in person, please use Acceptd to upload final video recordings of the audition repertoire. The deadline to upload final video recordings (if you will be completing the final round remotely) is Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 11:59pm PST. You will then need to interview with our Music Education faculty via Zoom on the remote date listed on the schedule. Please be sure to schedule your remote interview if you choose the remote recording upload option.

If you do not attend both components of the final round for Music Education (both the audition AND interview), you will not be considered for admission. Please be sure to schedule both elements as outlined above.

Accompanist Information

The Department of Music will provide collaborative pianists for all voice auditions and graduate instrumental auditions, including a warm up period 30 minutes prior to the audition. Piano accompaniment is not required for undergraduate instrumental auditions.

Students are welcome to bring their own accompanist or contact James Lent should the applicant wish to work with an accompanist from UCLA.

Students must submit their music to Dr. James Lent no later than January 10th if they have requested a UCLA pianist.

All applicants are required to submit their accompanist preferences by Saturday, January 4, 2025 using this form. Applicants have the option of either bringing their own collaborative pianist or requesting one from UCLA prior to the January 4 deadline. The pianist request form must include your repertoire and correct audition time. If requested, the school will then assign you a staff collaborative pianist paid for by UCLA. A 15-20 minute warm-up the hour before your audition and/or a 30 minute rehearsal the day before will also be included if requested. Any additional time, or requests after the deadline will be paid for by the applicant if additional time is available on a first come first served basis.

No late requests for school funded accompanists will be accepted. If you request a staff pianist to be provided by UCLA, you will be contacted 14 days prior to your audition with your accompanist’s name and contact information. If you submit your request by Saturday, January 4, 2025 and do not hear back 14 days prior to your audition, please email Dr. James Lent.

In both cases (remote and in person), you will be able to take the 45-minute exam any time between 9am and 4pm. If you send in final video recordings in lieu of a live audition, please plan to sign up for the February 1 remote exam.
