MA/PhD Students

Petitions & Forms

PhD students in the Department of Music need to complete these two steps to begin the process of advancing to candidacy.

  1. Submit your PhD exam committee request form for your written qualifying exams. This should be submitted to us no later than early February ahead of your written qualifying exams (not your Four Pieces!). This is only for your written exams based on previous coursework.
  2. Nominate your doctoral committee. This must be done after you have finished your written exams but long before your oral qualifying exam (defense of your prospectus). I would recommend submitting this in early February, if possible, as the DYA deadline is February 16th, and you will need to have submitted your prospectus when you apply for DYA. Having your committee in place before then, who can review your prospectus ahead of 2/16, would be ideal.
  3. DYA Information and Application (DUE FEBRUARY 16)
  4. Four Pieces Exam will be held on March 1. (Bria Russ or Adam Fox will contact you directly to schedule your timeslot)

  5. Oral Examination (prospectus defense) should be held no later than March 18-20.
