It was a great weekend for UCLA trumpet students, who gave outstanding performances at this year’s National Trumpet Competition (NTC) in Lexington, KY. Graduate student Ellen Shinogle, with her accompanist Matthew Tong, took first prize in the Blackburn Trumpets Graduate Solo Division. She was awarded a $3000 cash prize. Fellow trumpet students Ben Hare, Natalie Dungey, Chris Chervet, and Kayla Solomon were also chosen to compete as soloists, and the entire group, with Shinogle, performed in the ensemble category.
“The entire group played brilliantly,” said award-winning trumpeter Jens Lindemann, who is head of the Brass Area in the UCLA Department of Music.
Founded in 1991, NTC is the largest instrument competition in the world. Past performers have included Grammy Award Winners Chris Botti, Maynard Ferguson, Randy Brecker as well as Doc Severinsen, Canadian Brass, Mnozil Brass, Phil Smith and others.
