NEW LOCATION: Ensemble Room, Evelyn & Mo Ostin Music Center, UCLA
As part of Wadada Leo Smith’s residency, the RedKoral Quartet will record his String Quartet No. 11, which has yet to be played in public. To share the complexity and depth of his work and philosophy, this rehearsal for this recording session is open to the public.
"A majority of my string quartets have some elements of the create and ankhrasmation language, and the ensemble forms. The scores are essentially non-metric, and a full page represents a complete “bar” length, with no maintaining of the concept of downbeat and upbeat idea," wrote Smith. "The ensemble’s leadership articulation continuously fluctuates from person to person as the decision for continuity keeps changing from page to page."
Wadada Leo Smith is a 2019 UC Regents Lecturer at UCLA. The Regents’ Lecturer program of the University of California was instituted in 1962 to encourage rare and valuable interaction between gifted non-academics and the university community.
