Andreas Foivos Apostolou is a pianist-composer and producer from Athens, Greece. He was born into an artistic family in Athens, Greece, and was brought up by his mother, an actress. Theater and storytelling are vital sources of inspiration in his music. His works are often described as jazzy, Balkan, prog metal, and minimalist. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Composition for Visual Media at UCLA. As a concert pianist, he has toured in Europe, Asia, and America performing a wide range of repertoire, including premières by Leo Ornstein, Bernard Rands, Anders Hillborg, and Apostolou’s own works. His works have been recorded by Naxos, and he has won first prizes in international competitions, both as a pianist and as a composer.

He studied with composers Ian Krouse, Kay Rhie, Peter Golub, Richard Danielpour, Claude Baker, George Tsontakis and pianists André Watts, Alain Lefèvre, Robert Levin, Charles Abramovic, and Vinia Tsopelas. As a film composer, he has scored the soundtrack for Daphne Matziarakis’ short documentary “Container”, which was published in the New York Times Op-Docs series in 2020.

He graduated from University of Macedonia (Ph.D., Piano), Indiana University (MM, Piano and Composition), and Temple University (BM, Piano). His most important contribution as a researcher is the publication of a new Ornstein work, Sonata for Piano (1917), which he discovered at the Yale- Ornstein Papers Archive while completing his Ph.D. dissertation (2021). During his studies in the U.S., he has been awarded numerous competition awards, scholarships, fellowships, and academic prizes.

His most recent projects include soundtracks for short films by LA-based independent directors, collaborations with choreographers, and piano solo recitals in the concert series Piano Spheres at Colburn School.
