The UCLA Wind Ensemble presents its first concert of the academic year, joined by the Canyon Crest Academy Wind Ensemble from San Diego under the direction of UCLA music alumna Amy Villanova. Canyon Crest kicks off the evening with band classics by Rimsky-Korsakov, Persichetti, and Grainger, paired with newer works by Canadian composer Cait Nishimura and Mexican composer (and LA Phil favorite) Gabriela Ortiz.
The UCLA Wind Ensemble opens and closes the second half with Erika Svanoe's She Dares, She Leaps and Dmitry Shostakovich's Festive Overture. In between, graduate student conductors lead the ensemble in The Wonder of You, a three-movement suite of love songs set originally for a UCLA graduate conductor by alumnus and adjunct professor emeritus Mark Carlson. UCLA distinguished professor of trumpet Jens Lindemann joins the band for John Mackey's Antique Violences, a thrilling and virtuosic contribution to the concerto repertoire for trumpet and wind band.
