Ji Young Kim

Assistant Adjunct Professor - Performance Studies

Ji Young Kim is a scholar-performer specializing in the history, theory, and practice of music from the 18th and 19th centuries. A specialist of the Schumann-Brahms circle, she was an invited speaker at multiple celebrations of Clara Schumann’s 2019 bicentennial in Germany and the United States. Her scholarship to date brings together microhistory, performance, analysis, and criticism to explore questions of meaning through embodied musical and social practices. It has been supported by the DAAD, the Einaudi Center for International Studies, and the American Brahms Society, the latter of which awarded her PhD dissertation from Cornell University the Karl Geiringer Scholarship. Part of this work has been published in 19th-Century Music.

As a historical pianist, Ji Young plays Viennese fortepianos from the 18th and 19th centuries and has appeared at the Boston Early Music, Bloomington Early Music, and Valley of the Moon festivals. She joins UCLA after being Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester, where she taught both at the Eastman School and Satz Department of Music. Previously, she was a lecturer at the Australian National University and Indiana University–Bloomington.
