It may well be impossible to capture John Coltrane’s full achievement in words. He wasn’t just an outstanding musician. He wasn’t just a gifted composer. He was a kind of bright light, hot and searing. His music astonished many, and was also deeply misunderstood. Like many a generational artist, Coltrane could divide the room.
On October 9 & 10, the global jazz department paid tribute to Coltrane with study and words and music. This two-day event was both gathering and session; celebration and provocation.
