UCLA Bruin Marching Band - The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music

UCLA Bruin
Marching Band

"The Solid Gold Sound"

The “Solid Gold Sound” UCLA Marching Band is the largest and one of the most diverse organizations on the UCLA campus. 250+ members representing more than 100 majors in every College and School at UCLA perform for every home football game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Additionally, band members play at all UCLA Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball home games in historic Pauley Pavilion. Although many band members are majoring in music, a majority of students (~87%) are not music majors.

(Note: The official UCLA Marching Band website is currently under construction and will be available soon. Please refer to this page for audition information in the meantime!)

Audition Information
Audition Information

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the Solid Gold Sound!

Once you have been accepted as a UCLA student for the 2026-27 academic year and filed your SIR, you may audition for the UCLA Marching Band. Current UCLA students are also eligible and encouraged to audition; the process is the same for incoming and current students. Please contact Associate Director Ken Fisher with any questions you may have: uclabruinband@gmail.com.

All auditions for the 2026-27 Bruin Marching Band will be completed by video submission. (Videos taken on a smartphone are more than sufficient.)

The UCLA Band marches the following woodwind instruments: piccolo, flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax

The UCLA Band marches the following brass instruments: trumpet, mellophone, trombone, sousaphone

The UCLA Drumline marches snare, quads, bass, and cymbals, and does not use any pit or front ensemble.

Music Majors are automatically accepted into the band, although in many cases we still ask for a video submission. For example, part placement within trumpet and trombone sections, or those wanting to march a different instrument than their major.

Although there is no finite deadline, we do like to have auditions wrapped up by mid-August. We use rolling acceptances, and auditions may close in some sections as they fill up, so it is always in your best interest to audition earlier rather than later. We understand that some people might not have access to school instruments/equipment or might be challenged finding an acceptable place to make their video. Please contact the email above if you encounter any issues.

Video Requirements

The video should be done in one continuous take and should not be more than a few minutes total. For section-specific information (Woodwinds/Brass, Drumline, and Color Guard), please see below.

Submission

Upload your video to YouTube as an “unlisted” video, or to another file sharing service such as google drive, dropbox, or box. (Please check to make sure the permissions will allow us to view it!)

Secure the download link that you will send to us via the form below. When you’re ready to submit your audition, fill out the online application here: 2026-27 UCLA Band Auditions

Audition Requirements

Brass and Woodwinds

What your video should include:

  1. A short introduction of yourself
  2. The following concert major scales, one octave up and down: Bb, Eb, C, F
  3. A short prepared piece or etude (no longer than 2 minutes)

(We can accept auditions on a related instrument, for example: euphonium/baritone for a trombone or tuba spot, French horn for a mellophone spot)

What your video should include:

  1. A short introduction of yourself
  2. A short demonstration of proficiency in a few standard drum rudiments
  3. A short prepared piece or etude demonstrating your ability (you can use music from your high school field show or any other performing group)

We accept members into the Drumline as a whole based on your video submission, then assign specific instruments at the beginning of Band Camp. Pit and Mallet specialists are of course encouraged to audition, and we’ll work together to find the best fit within the line.

Music Majors are automatically accepted into the band, although in most cases we will still ask for a video submission to get an idea of where you would fit in the line. For Drumline, there is a spot on the audition form where you may include an optional secondary video, for show/rehearsal/performance with Drumline/ensemble.

What your video should include:

  1. A short introduction of yourself
  2. A short routine to music of your choice

and/or

A show rehearsal/performance video showing you with Color Guard or Auxiliary Unit.

We can accept a video of you performing with your Color Guard or auxiliary unit in lieu of the solo routine video, both to help with logistical issues, and to encourage auditions from anyone who might be uncomfortable doing a solo routine.

There is a space on the audition form where you can include an optional supplemental video. For those that do the solo video, you can use that space to also include a show rehearsal/performance video if you wish.

Note: For the show video, please identify yourself in some way. You can write in the comments section on the audition form, the description section of a YouTube video, or even put an arrow, etc on the video indicating which is you.

Audition/Membership Questions

Does it cost anything to join the band?

Absolutely not! There are no band membership fees or dues. We provide all uniform parts, including gloves and shoes. Additionally, all band members receive a Nike polo and shoes as a secondary uniform. We do ask members to provide a pair of khakis but encourage students to reach out if there are any affordability concerns.

As one of the world’s leading research universities, we understand that students have rigorous courses of study and major requirements. We rehearse 3 days per week in the evenings (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) for 2 hours each day. Additionally, absences for class conflicts, exams, illness, and/or emergencies are excused. There are generally no full-band events on non-game weekends.

You will arrive approximately 10 days prior to the start of classes; on-campus students will be permitted to move into their dorm at no charge to the student. Band Camp consists of movement training, learning the pregame show, rehearsing school and show music, and other events. Additional information will be provided over the summer.

Yes. All students will receive a Permission to Enroll (PTE) number for MUSC 185H.
