On October 24, 2018, Hydro Studios announced the release and premiere of BALI: BEATS OF PARADISE, a new documentary that features Ethnomusicology Professor I Nyoman Wenten and the music of Balinese Gamelan. Gamelan is a sacred part of Balinese culture, but the musical style is quickly diminishing. After 40 years of teaching and performing Gamelan music, Wenten travels to Bali to pay homage to the tradition, and when he returns, he teams up with GRAMMY-award winning vocalist Judith Hill to reintroduce Gamelan to pop music audiences. The final result is a colorful music video for Hill’s new song, “Queen of the Hill,” a unique combination of classic funk and traditional Gamelan melody. The film was funded and produced by friends of UCLA and the UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
BALI: BEATS OF PARADISE premieres at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. The premiere is full. However, there will be an ADDITIONAL complimentary screening at the Downtown Independent (251 S Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90012) on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:30 PM. Grammy Award Winning Artist Judith Hill will be in attendance. Please RSVP to balibeatsdtla@gmail.com if you would like to attend. The documentary opens to the public in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York on November 16, and is followed by one night only screenings featuring Gamelan music performances in several cities across the U.S.
