Judith A. Peraino

Judith A. Peraino is Professor of Music and Sound Studies at Cornell University. Her publications include articles on medieval music, Blondie, David Bowie, PJ Harvey, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Pussy Riot, and the books Listening to the Sirens: Musical Technologies of Queer Identity from Homer to Hedwig, and Giving Voice to Love: Song and Self-Expression from the Troubadours to Guillaume de Machaut. Tom McEnaney is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Spanish & Portuguese at UC Berkeley. He is the author of the book Acoustic Properties: Radio, Narrative, and the New Neighborhood of the Americas and articles on Argentine rock nacional, Cuban electroacoustic music, Spotify, This American Life, and David Lynch’s use of sound. Tommy Gear is a founding member of the legendary LA punk band the Screamers. Hailing from Seattle, he befriended the band’s lead singer Tomata du Plenty in the early 1970s, participated in underground performance troupe in Ze Whiz Kidz and the band Tupperwares before relocating to LA with Tomata to form the Screamers in 1976. Since the Screamers disbanded in 1981, he has been involved in a broad range of pursuits including the development of electronic keyboard operating manuals for Roland, academic research in psychology, and the editing and creative design of art monographs and exhibition catalogues, collaborating on projects and exhibitions with the artist Lyle Ashton Harris among others. Paul Roessler is a musician and record producer, and was prominent member of the LA punk scene during the late 1970s and 1980s. He played keyboards in bands such as the Screamers, Twisted Roots, 45 Grave, Nervous Gender, SAUPG, Geza X and the Mommymen, Mike Watt and the Secondmen, Nina Hagen, and The Deadbeats. Roessler has also released over a dozen solo recordings including “Abominable,” “Curator,” “The Arc,” “6/12,” and “Match Girl.”
