The UCLA Symphonic Band, comprising talented students from across the university, performs works by UCLA alumnus and lecturer Dwayne S. Milburn, John Mackey, and Julius Fučík, closing the first half of the concert with a suite from Joe Hisaishi's acclaimed score to the Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli classic animated film My Neighbor Totoro.
The UCLA Wind Ensemble opens with Los Angeles composer Reena Esmail's Tuttarana, a title that fuses the Italian musical term tutti with the Hindustani musical form tarana, followed by Percy Aldridge Grainger's Children's March and a setting of the Japanese Takeda Lullaby by Singaporean composer Benjamin Yeo. The band then presents the West Coast premiere of UCLA alumna Leanna Primiani's Revolutionary Triptych, a work that honors the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and three young American heroines. The concert ends with David Maslanka's monumental A Child's Garden of Dreams.
