Emmie Head

Emmie Head (she/her) is a PhD candidate in UCLA’s Department of Musicology. She
holds a B.A. in music from St. Olaf College and an M.A. in musicology from UCLA.
Emmie’s dissertation project seeks to understand how the concurrent developments of
artificial intelligence and copyright law impact music making practices in the United
States with a specific focus on analysis of policy language and growing discourse about
whether or not AI should have a role in art making at all. Emmie has presented her work
at the conferences of American Musicological Society, the International Association for
the Study of Popular Music (US and International) , Society for American Music, and the
First International Conference on the Study of Music and AI in Stockholm. At UCLA,
Emmie is also pursuing graduate certificates in writing pedagogy, with a focus on
interdisciplinary writing, and digital humanities. Beyond her academic work, Emmie
works as a forensic musicological research assistant for Judith Finell Music Services.
When not musicking, Emmie can be found Greek pastries or sourdough or hanging with
some of her favorite dogs – miniature dachshunds.
