Noted as a keyboardist, composer, bandleader, singer, guitarist, and arranger of popular and traditional Malian music, Cheick-Tidiane Seck is well-versed in the performance of jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, and other types of global music. This recording is a project produced by students who worked with Seck during Winter 2000. The performers on West African Music Meets Jazz with Seck include students, faculty, and staff as well as musicians from the Los Angeles community. An accompanying songbook, Cheick-Tidiane Seck with the UCLA Griot Society and Friends: West African Music Meets Jazz, containing essays, interviews with Cheick-Tidiane Seck, and song lyrics and transcripts of excerpts from selected songs on the compact disc, is also available through UCLA Ethnomusicology Publications.
