UCLA Ethnomusicology World Music Instrument Collection - Java

Instruments of Java

The Javanese gamelan ensemble, named Venerable Dark Cloud, came to UCLA in 1958. The collection has 82 pieces and most are made of brass and struck with wooden mallets, including gongs, peking, and gender. The ivory rebab fiddle in this collection was once used by ethnomusicologist Mantle Hood when he studied in Indonesia.
