Joy H. Calico, professor and chair of musicology, has received the 2026 Undergraduate Research Week Faculty Mentor Award. The award recognizes UCLA faculty whose sustained commitment to mentorship has made a meaningful impact on undergraduate students engaged in research or creative work. Calico received multiple nominations for the award.

“Joy works tirelessly for the students,” said Michael Beckerman, dean of the school of music. “She fosters students’ intellectual growth by challenging and nurturing them. It’s gratifying that UCLA has recognized her exceptional mentorship.

Calico directs the senior capstone project in musicology, this year marked by a day-long conference of presentations that drew faculty, graduate students and undergraduates from across the school of music. Dean Michael Beckerman gave the keynote address.

Students and faculty reacted strongly to news of the award.

“We all see the hard work that Joy puts into the department and its students,” said Nina Eidsheim, professor of musicology. “We are all benefactors. And she gives the same attention and care to colleagues as well.”

Student Angie Lee said: “Professor Calico possesses the remarkable ability to balance discipline with compassion. She not only pushes us to improve academically and professionally but also cares deeply about our well-being. Her mentorship has been integral to my growth and success throughout my time at UCLA.”

Joy Calico was one of 14 UCLA faculty to win the faculty mentorship award, as part of UCLA’s undergraduate research week.
