Greetings, Bruins!
I am so thrilled to be coming into the role of associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music this fall. I am deeply passionate about fostering creative and intellectual spaces in which everyone can thrive, and building artistic communities in which even the most ambitious of dreams can be realized.
As an interdisciplinary artist and scholar, my core values are indelibly intertwined with accessibility and inclusivity. I always work collaboratively and believe strongly in listening to and learning from others. Throughout this first year, I plan to hold a number of open conversations with students, faculty, and staff, to hear your ideas and help you continue to build a flourishing, vibrant community based in mutual respect and esteem–for what makes us different, and what brings us together.
I look forward to getting to know everyone here through these conversations, at events and concerts, and during my weekly drop-in sessions (more info to come!). My door is always open, and I am so excited to work with you all.

This 24-hour hotline is specifically earmarked for incidents of racism and predatory behavior, and connects a student immediately with a trained counselor who can direct students to existing resources for any number of issues.
ARAD, the Anti-Racism Anti-Discrimination Committee of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is a non-hierarchical group of students, staff, and faculty members committed to changing the atmosphere of our Bruin community by addressing issues of bias, marginalization and discrimination toward black, Indigenous and people of color and other intersectional communities.
In the days, weeks and months ahead, the School of Music will consider several guiding questions so that we may build an environment for students, faculty and staff that is inclusive and reflective of all voices:
• How may we access, cultivate and maintain a school climate in which every member of our community feels safe and valued as a way of embodying our mission, vision and core values?
• How may we best educate our entire School of Music community?
• How do we recruit, hire, support and retain a diverse community of faculty, staff and students?
• How may we provide increased financial support to historically underrepresented students, especially black students?

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and its inaugural dean, Eileen L. Strempel, launched Still Waiting in 2021, a speaker series that invites the public to join UCLA students in conversation with prominent figures invited by the school’s Anti-Racism Anti-Discrimination Committee (ARAD) to help us understand ourselves and our response to this deeply hurtful moment in our nation’s racial reckoning. Still Waiting invites us to demand better of our communities and better of our actions in response to the tangible effects of racist policing, academic and institutional indifference, and methodologies that may bridge the gap between feelings of alienation and feelings of sanctuary and refuge for us all.
