Four Faculty Receive Chancellor’s Arts Initiative Grants

The Chancellor’s Council on the Arts, in partnership with the Office of Research and Creative Activities, has announced fourteen faculty-led projects that will receive seed funding this year. Four of them involve faculty from The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

Opera, Black and Queer â€” Joy H. Calico, department of musicology professor and chair
An international symposium convenes scholars and artists to explore the intersections of opera with Black and queer histories, culminating in performances and the North American premiere of an opera film.

Voices Rising: Bridging Pre-service Music Educators with Justice-Involved Youths â€” Johanna Gamboa-Kroesen, department of music education assistant professor.
This research examines how collaborative music-making in a juvenile detention setting shapes emerging educators’ perspectives on teaching, identity and community engagement.

Altadena After the Fire: Reimagining Place Through Music and Poetry â€” Thomas Hodgson, department of musicology and music industry associate professor
Composers and local poets collaborate on a new work reflecting on wildfire loss and recovery, fostering dialogue around resilience, sustainability and community memory.

Echoes of Heritage: Korean Musical Legacies in Los Angeles â€” Namhee Lee, department of Asian languages and cultures professor; Gamin Kang, department of ethnomusicology lecturer
A documentary that preserves the stories of first-generation Korean traditional musicians whose work helped shape cultural life in Southern California and UCLA’s music programs.
