Once enrolled in either Music Industry 95 or 195, please begin following the course instructions below. Please email the instructor/Faculty supervisor, Prof. MacFadyen (d.m@g.ucla.edu) if you have any questions.

1. Every week, send your Faculty supervisor a 500 word email, keeping them up to date on how things are going at your internship. We are interested in (a) what you are doing, and how it fulfills our goals for the internship; (b) what you see going on, and how it does or does not fit with what you have learned about the music industry. Feel free to take a conversational tone.

2. To fulfill the requirements of Music Industry 95/195, a paper of 8-12 double-spaced pages must be submitted to the Faculty supervisor (electronically) by the last teaching day of the quarter in which the internship falls. You can draw on your weekly emails to provide raw material for the paper.

Include in your paper your answers to a significant number of the following questions, indeed to all of them if possible.

  1. Why did you pick this internship? What did you hope to learn from it?
  2. What does the company do?
  3. What were your general responsibilities?
  4. Give an example of a particular assignment you worked on or completed.
  5. Were you able to use any of your UCLA training, either as a musician or in your major, in any way? If so, how? If not, why not?
  6. What was your work schedule? How many hours did you work each week and for how many weeks?
  7. How would you describe the work environment? Pleasant? Laid-back? Tense? Demanding? Give details.
  8. What are the most important things you learned from the internship?
  9. How did the internship affect your career goals?
  10. What would you like to tell the company that would help them make the internship more effective?

If you have already taken Music Industry 101, discuss how the experience of your internship sheds light on one or more of the critical issues discussed in this course. If you have not taken Music Industry 101, you may substitute another MI class that is relevant. If you have not taken any other Music Industry classes that are relevant, you may skip this question.

At the top of your paper, be sure to put your name, your major, your year in school, and your student number.
