This film, in its Los Angeles premiere, captures the 50th anniversary of the grassroots magazine Con Safos: Reflections of Life in the Barrio. This East Los Angeles magazine served as a platform for expression to capture the experiences of the barrio, from the beginning of the Chicano Movement in 1968 and into the early 1970s. Many local and national writers, artists, poets, educators, and activists contributed to voice the injustices that plagued the barrios. It was a venue that provided the opportunity to publish works where none existed before. This documentary is a retrospective of the magazine’s influence and its contribution to enlighten and educate the community in its struggle for social justice.
