The festival’s final day brings a forward-looking celebration of innovation, collaboration, and artistic voice across a diverse set of ensembles. The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz represents the next generation of jazz artists, showcasing musicians whose work is rooted in the tradition while actively shaping its future through bold, contemporary expression. The Commercial Music Studio Ensemble, led by Duane Benjamin, highlights the intersection of jazz with modern production and popular styles, emphasizing versatility, creativity, and the evolving landscape of today’s music industry.

The Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, led by Hitomi Oba, offers a platform for exploratory and boundary-pushing work, where composition and improvisation merge to reflect current directions in the genre. Closing the program is the Roberto Miranda Combo, led by Roberto Miranda, bringing an intimate, deeply expressive approach that centers storytelling, interplay, and a profound connection to the roots of jazz. Together, these ensembles celebrate both the legacy and the limitless future of the music.

Acknowledgment

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). As a land grant institution, we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.

We would also like to acknowledge the impact on our city and community of the recent wildfires and their aftermath. We believe that art and scholarship can provide comfort in times of great suffering.
