By examining the fieldnotes and content of twenty-six audiotape reels, this talk provides an overview of the Joseph Lenherr Collection of Taiwanese music at the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive.
Reggae has become so normalized in Hawai‘i that it is often associated with local or Native Hawaiian people instead of Black people. Simultaneously, reggae is often not considered Hawaiian music because it does not sound “Native Hawaiian enough.” Indigenous reciprocal relationality is one way to move beyond the limiting frameworks of authenticity and appropriation regarding cultural mixture. Black and Indigenous relationality in reggae in Hawai‘i illustrates this well.
To acknowledge and value diverse ways of knowing and learning, incorporating indigenous cultures to create inclusive learning environments that reflect students’ cultural identities in South African tertiary education contexts.
