Simone Salmon is a PhD student in Ethnomusicology at UCLA. She received her bachelor’s degree in music with concentrations in music theory and harp performance from UCLA (2011) and her master’s degree in Musicology from the University of Oxford (2014). She specializes in Sephardic Jewish music from the late-Ottoman Empire and has published in 100 Years of Sephardic Los Angeles and has several forthcoming publications including a chapter in Jews Across the Americas 1492-present, a digital exhibit for the Smithsonian, an article in Ethnomusicology Review, a book review and contributions inMusica Judaica. Simone is a co-author of the Oxford Annotated Bibliography entry on Sephardi and Mizrahi Music. She is the co-president of the Special Interest Group for Jewish Music at the Society for Ethnomusicology. Simone has presented internationally in Istanbul, Essaouira, and Paris as well as at conferences across America. She is the recipient of fellowships and grants from the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, American Research Institute in Turkey, Bluma Appel Research Grant, Maurice Amado Research Grant, Rotter Research Grant, Y&S Nazarian Center for Israeli Studies Grant, Stephen Wise Scholarship, Lowell Milken Fund for American Jewish Music, UCLA Graduate Research Mentorship, UCLA Graduate Summer Research Mentorship, and others. Simone’s current focus is recordings of her family from Sephardic (modern day) Turkey. She plays the Turkish oud and hosts a radio show, Los Bilbilikos, about music in Judeo-Spanish.
