Music and Metaphor Symposium: Accepting Submissions

< 1

We are accepting submissions until February 22nd for a two-day symposium on music and metaphors. The symposium, organized by the UCLA PEER Lab & Durham University Music Department, will take place virtually on April 29-30, 2022. The program investigates how musical metaphor works as a resource of understanding—how it shapes the ways in which we perceive and comprehend not only music and sound, but one another and the world.

Submissions are accepted from scholars, writers, and musicians of all backgrounds in the following formats:

Individual submissions: 10 minutes long. Papers, workshop prompts, performances, and other alternative formats are welcome.

Panels/Roundtables: 30 minutes long, involving three or more individuals.

This event is an opportunity for creative play with metaphors, oriented towards the inclusion of marginalized perspectives on music or the production of new vantage points. For comprehensive submission information, click here.

The symposium’s ultimate aim is to shift the power balance: Whose experiences and practices are recognized? Which relationships do we have the capacity to note? What kinds of worlds can we create?

Submit here by February 22, 2022. Decisions will be sent out no later than March 8, 2022. Check back here for symposium registration information!
