This year is Arnold Schoenberg's 150th birthday, and the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna is coordinating and promoting events worldwide to mark the occasion. This half-day symposium is dedicated to new directions in Schoenberg scholarship that will consist of two sessions, divided by a coffee break, and followed by a reception. One session will showcase young scholars forging innovative new research paths, including a current PhD student and an alumna of the UCLA Musicology program. The second will be a roundtable devoted to Leonard Stein, a Schoenberg student who was a fixture on the Los Angeles new music scene, founding director of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute at USC, and founder of the Encounters concert series as well as the renowned PIano Spheres initiative, featuring our own Gloria Cheng.
