Intangible: A Workshop and Concert Bridging Global Traditions and Experimental Music

world-music
Ensemble Room: Ostin Music Center

Join us for a unique workshop and concert featuring Intangible, an ensemble that blends global musical traditions with cutting-edge experimental sounds. This immersive event brings together Korean reed master gamin, saxophonist Robert Reigle, bassist Jeff Schwartz, and percussionist Tim Feeney, creating boundary-pushing soundscapes that transcend genres.

UCLA students will actively engage in a hands-on workshop, exploring cross-cultural improvisation and contemporary approaches to traditional music. Through direct collaboration with the artists, students will experience fusion music with avant-garde jazz and experimental textures, deepening their understanding of global musical dialogues.

The evening concert will showcase the culmination of these interactions, presenting a dynamic performance that redefines musical expression. This opportunity is to witness and participate in an innovative convergence of tradition and experimentation.

INTANGIBLE
Intangible is a boundary-pushing ensemble that explores sound through overtones, sustained tones, extremes of register, density, and unconventional instrumental techniques. The group’s name reflects the expertise of reed player gamin, a master of Korean traditional music and an official bearer of an Intangible Cultural Asset, as designated by the Korean government. Beyond traditional music, gamin has collaborated with improvisers and performed as a soloist with Western orchestras, premiering concerti for Korean reeds. gamin is also the director of two world music ensembles in the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology: the Music of Korea Ensemble and the Cultures in Musical Dialogue Ensemble, the ensemble that inspired this workshop.

Saxophonist Robert Reigle, bassist Jeff Schwartz, and percussionist Tim Feeney bring diverse influences, engaging with scored, improvised, traditional, experimental, and popular genres. Collectively, they have studied and performed with master musicians from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, enriching the ensemble’s multicultural sound.

Together, Intangible creates a unique, immersive experience that blends global traditions and contemporary experimental practices, reimagining boundaries and crafting music that is both innovative and rooted in cultural depth.
