Pathways and Possibilities: Building a Career in the Arts

masterclasses

Join the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music as we welcome Dr. Thomas Kurtz for a masterclass, hosted by the studio of Dr. Jan Berry Baker.

About Dr. Kurtz:

Dr. Thomas Kurtz enjoys a multi-hyphenate career as an educator, scholar, performing artist, and cultural arts leader, whose work sits at the intersection of music, social justice, and community engagement. Through collaborations with the local, national, and global organizations, Thomas has created socially engaged arts experiences that honor history, foster dialogue, and build community. As a saxophonist, Thomas frequently collaborates with composers, performs new music across the Bay Area, and recently appeared as a soloist at Carnegie Hall.

Thomas is committed to mentoring the next generation of artists to see their creative practice as both a professional pursuit and a tool for social transformation. He currently teaches within the Performing Arts & Social Justice Department at the University of San Francisco and within the Professional Development Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He holds degrees from Montclair State University, University of Missouri - Kansas City, the Global Leaders Institute, and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively, where he received his MBA in Arts Leadership and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a cognate in Cultural Arts Management.

Acknowledgment

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). As a land grant institution, we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.

We would also like to acknowledge the impact on our city and community of the recent wildfires and their aftermath. We believe that art and scholarship can provide comfort in times of great suffering.
