Gan Xiong

See Bio

Chinese-born conductor Gan Xiong has led orchestras including the Case Western Reserve University Orchestra (Cleveland, OH), Tokyo Sinfonia, UCLA Symphony, Miami Music Festival Orchestra, and Bacâu Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania), and has conducted student productions of musicals including “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” and “Dear Evan Hansen.” He has led youth orchestras in Shanghai including the Huangpu District Youth Orchestra and Shanghai Kite Youth Orchestra, where he served as faculty in a Baroque summer camp session and conducted its final concert in 2019.

 

Also a vocalist, Gan was a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus from 2021 to 2022, where he participated in a recording of Shostakovich Symphony No. 3 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

 

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in vocal performance from Case Western Reserve University and a Master’s Degree in orchestral conducting from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. His teachers have included Kathleen Horvath, Bruce Hangen, Charles Gambetta, and Ovidiu Balan; he has participated in masterclasses with Mark Gibson, Arthur Fagen, Apo Hsu, Robert Ryker, and John Farrer. He currently pursues a DMA degree in orchestral conducting at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, studying with Neal Stulberg.

Samuel Chung

See Bio

Samuel Chung is an orchestral conducting major in the Masters program at UCLA, studying with Neal Stulberg and leading its ensembles, including UCLA Symphony, UCLA Philharmonia, and uclaFLUX.

 

He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Boston University, where his primary teachers were Lucia Lin and Jeremy Yudkin. At B.U., he was conductor of Time’s Arrow, the school’s contemporary music ensemble, and also studied with Joshua Rifkin, Steven Ansell, Peter Zazofsky and others. He received a Boston University College of Fine Arts Scholarship in violin performance and its 2023 Departmental Award in Musicology and Ethnomusicology.

 

As founder and artistic director of the Magari Ensemble, Chung has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects with organizations such as New England Conservatory’s Blind Glass Ensemble and Schönberg Center Vienna.

 

In recent summers, Chung studied with Gerard Schwarz as a Conducting Scholar at the Eastern Music Festival and was in residence at the 2023 Montecito International Music Festival as conductor of the festival orchestra. He has also assisted and prepared ensembles for conductors including Paul Phillips (Stanford University) and Larry Livingston (USC Thornton). In 2023, Chung was named Finalist of The Respighi Prize in Conducting, issued by the Chamber Orchestra of New York and Comune di Bologna (Italy).

Emma Breen

Trumpet See Bio

Emma Breen started trumpet in her local public school band program in central Illinois. Her passion for the instrument quickly grew, leading to competitions, honor bands, and eventually an undergraduate degree in performance at Northwestern University under the tutelage of David Bilger, Tom Rolfs, and Michael Sachs, among others.

 

Emma currently pursues a DMA degree at UCLA. She regularly plays with a number of local orchestras, including the Santa Monica Symphony, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, and Claremont Concert Orchestra. In January 2023, she became principal trumpet in the American Youth Symphony, the first woman to win that position in the orchestra’s 60+ year history. Emma is also an active studio musician, having recently made her Hollywood Bowl debut with “Barbie the Movie Live in Concert,” playing mainstage with the Adult Swim Festival at Comic Con San Diego, and participating in a number of film and TV projects. Having recently become engaged to a film composer, Emma has a special interest in advocating for new music. She also works in cancer research at University of Texas’ Zamudio Lab.

Xavier Paul

Timpani See Bio

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Xavier Paul is a songwriter, producer, audio engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and percussionist currently based in Los Angeles. His family encouraged his musical upbringing and enrolled him in private lessons for drumset and piano at age four. During his teenage years, he played percussion in school band programs while performing as drummer for his indie rock band Desert Bloom. Upon arriving at UCLA, Xavier began scoring student films for the Film & Photography Society while writing and performing alternative music under the artist name Xay Lavie, with a full-length album currently in development.

 

Xavier’s classical influences stem from Impressionist composers like Debussy and Ravel, as well as Romantic composers like Tchaikovsky and Mahler. His ultimate goal is to work with music and cinema while pushing the boundaries of modern audio and visual techniques

Adelle Rodkey

Oboe See Bio

As teacher and performer, oboist Adelle Rodkey’s aspiration is to enable her students and audiences to experience the delight of music. She performs in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings in Santa Barbara, and teaches oboe at Westmont College. She currently pursues her Master’s degree in Oboe Performance at UCLA, studying with Jonathan Davis.

Recent performing highlights include playing solo oboe in the Bach Brandenburg Concertos at “Roanoque Baroque” (Roanoke, VA), and becoming a concerto competition finalist at the Fresno Summer Orchestra Academy. With her Music Pedagogy degree from Wheaton Conservatory, Adelle helps bring music alive for her young students in both piano and oboe, and has designed a unique hands-on curriculum to introduce the core concepts of musical notation.

Davis Lerner

Bassoon See Bio

Davis Lerner is a bassoonist, performer, and educator in Southern California, currently pursuing his Master’s in bassoon performance at UCLA. He received his BA in Music from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and his principal teachers include John Steinmetz, Lisa Nauful, and Rebecca Rivera.

 

At UCLA, Davis performs with UCLA Philharmonia, the UCLA Early Music Ensemble, and the Gluck Fellows program in the Innellis Reed Trio. He has made appearances with the California Young Artists Symphony, SLO Master Chorale, Orchestra Novo, the Lompoc Pops, Opera San Luis Obispo, and the SLO Symphony. He was a featured soloist in the Cal Poly Symphony’s Winter 2023 Solo Competition, was the sousaphone section leader for the Cal Poly Mustang Band, and received the Mustang Band Director’s Award as well as the Cal Poly Arts Service to the Arts Award. He is also a proud Life Member of Kappa Kappa Psi’s Iota Pi chapter, the National Honorary Band Fraternity. During his months away from school, he has attended Idyllwild Summer Arts and the Assisi Performing Arts Festival (Assisi, Italy).

 

Davis is passionate about teaching and has served as a teaching assistant for two UCLA undergraduate courses, Introduction to Global Musicianship and Introduction to Music Theory. He also tutors musicianship, aural skills, and music theory, and coaches bassoon and woodwind students at local high schools and middle schools.

Ryan Heisinger

Trombone See Bio

Ryan Heisinger is a trombonist from Northern California currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in trombone performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, studying with James Miller.

 

Ryan performs in many genres, including orchestra, wind band, jazz, theater, and rock. He attended San José State University and won SYSU’s 2018-2019 Concerto Competition, performing Lars-Erik Larsson’s Concertino for Trombone and String Orchestra with the SJSU Symphony Orchestra. He received his Bachelor of Music degree Summa cum Laude in Music Education from SJSU. While at SJSU, he also received the Presser Scholar award, granted to the most outstanding music major each year.

 

While studying in San Jose, Ryan performed in many different ensembles. He played lead trombone in the SJSU Jazz Orchestra from 2016 to 2020, performing with artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sheléa, Tiffany Austin, and Jay Jennings of Snarky Puppy. As a member of the SJSU Symphony Orchestra, he played yearly concerts with Italian tenor Pasquale Esposito and was a part of their 2019 production of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS. Ryan was a founding member of ExNihilo Brass, a quintet consisting of top SJSU brass musicians. He is a founding member, recording engineer, and producer for Voluntary Hazing, a San José-based ska band.

Katlyn Lang

Flute See Bio

Katlyn Lang is a flutist from San Jose, California. She is currently a Master of Music flute performance major at UCLA, where she studies with Ben Smolen. As a soloist, she appeared with UCLA Philharmonia as part of the Spring 2024 Hear Now Music Festival, performing the world premiere of Thea Musgrave’s Orfeo V for two solo flutists and orchestra.

 

As an ensemble player, she performs often with UCLA Philharmonia, UCLA Symphony, and UCLA Wind Ensemble, in addition to chamber music engagements such as in UCLA Flux. She previously earned her Bachelor of Music degree at UCLA, studying with Denis Bouriakov and Erin Bouriakov. She has also performed in masterclasses for prominent flutists including Philippe Bernold, Lorna McGhee, Vincent Lucas, and Julien Beaudiment.

Devin Walsh

Clarinet See Bio

Clarinetist Devin Walsh currently pursues a Master of Music in clarinet performance at UCLA, studying with Joshua Ranz. He has also studied with Boris Allakhverdyan, Michael Wayne, Ralph Skiano, and the musicians of Decoda, the affiliate chamber ensemble of Carnegie Hall. Devin has performed as soloist with the UCLA Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Recent ensemble appearances include Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, both as principal clarinet. This winter, Devin will perform in UCLA Philharmonia’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

An active chamber musician, Devin has participated in commissions, premieres and recordings of new music. In 2021, he commissioned and premiered two new works by Los Angeles-based composers with his reed quintet, ReedPlay. He participated in a professional recording and on international live radio broadcasts of Kian Ravaie’s album On The Road. In 2022, Devin premiered Yoni Fogelman’s A Selection of Pets for wind quintet, in partnership with the Western National Parks Association and internationally acclaimed photographer Moses Sparks. Other recent chamber performances include the Brahms’ Trio for Clarinet, Cello and PIano and Nielsen’s Wind Quintet.

Aziel Ressler

Horn See Bio

Aziel Ressler is a classically trained french horn performer with a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and a minor in Religion and Classics from the University of Rochester. He is pursuing his Master of Music from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and studies with Amy Sanchez. Aziel plays with the Los Angeles Brass Alliance, UCLA Wind Ensemble and UCLA Philharmonia, and has subbed with the Oakland Symphony. He was a member of the 2022 Disneyland All-American College Band in Anaheim, California. Recently, Aziel performed for Kai Cenat and Lil Uzi in the Mafiathon 2 marching band. He’s marched mellophone and spun color guard for Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corp, and is pursuing a certification in personal training and yoga instruction.
