From Bread to Money: Musicking, Labor and Work

Lecture by Dr. Sonia Tamar Seeman, who is a graduate of UCLA’s Department of Ethnomusicology and is currently an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology in the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music. Dr. Seeman explores issues of musicking as laboring activity through the lens of four Turkish Romani professional musician families from the late 19th century to the present.

The Charles Mingus Ensemble and the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, both directed by Hitomi Oba, and the UCLA Jazz Orchestra, directed by Charley Harrison will be performing well-known jazz standards, popular songs, and compositions by faculty directors and students.

Lisa Pegher, percussionist in residency with the UCLA Composition area

World-renowned percussionist Lisa Pegher takes part in a residency with students of the UCLA Composition area culminating in a concert of their works specially composed for and performed by Lisa. Also on the program will be the premiere of “Lacrimae Angeli,” written by the co-chair of the UCLA Composition area, Richard Danielpour. Professor Danielpour is the Susan G. Covel and Mitchel D. Covel, M.D., Chair in Music (2021–2024)

The Naghash Ensemble of Armenia

The Naghash Ensemble combines the earthy spirituality of Armenian folk song, new classical music, and contemporary post-minimalism with the energy of rock and jazz. Three brilliant female vocalists and some of Armenia’s finest instrumentalists on duduk, oud, dhol, and piano play captivating new music based on sacred texts by the medieval Armenian mystic poet and priest, Mkrtich Naghash.
