Music and Justice Concert, featuring Dave Brubeck’s “The Gates of Justice”

This momentous concert on Feb. 26, 2023, at UCLA’s iconic Royce Hall, features works by six contemporary composers addressing social justice, including world premieres by Diane White-Clayton and multi-Grammy winner Arturo O’Farrill, followed by a rare performance of the landmark 1969 cantata “The Gates of Justice” by legendary jazz composer and musician Dave Brubeck.

Second Performance: Music and Justice Concert Featuring Dave Brubeck’s “The Gates of Justice”

Continuing a new series entitled Music and Justice, this second concert performance takes place at Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. It features a rare performance of the landmark 1969 cantata “The Gates of Justice” by legendary jazz composer and musician Dave Brubeck. World premieres and newer compositions will be featured in the first half of the concert.

Music and Justice Conference

This public conference features prominent scholars and experts exploring the historical and cultural connections of Black and Jewish communities in the United States, intimate analyses of Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice, and the contemporary relevance of music to social justice.

Each year, thousands of people participate as learners and audience members in Yiddish and klezmer music programs. Many of them are young people seeking connection to their roots. The ‘klezmer revival’ that began in the 1980’s is thriving today.
