Applications for all minors are opened on Monday of Week 1 in Fall and Spring quarter and close promptly at 5pm on Friday of Week 4. In order to prepare for your application, please complete a proposed degree plan that incorporates all required classes for your prospective minor with your current plan of study for your major. How to Add a
School of Music Minor
Minors
Ethnomusicology Minor 
(Please note: link will only work between Week 1 and Week 4 of Fall and Spring quarters.) The Ethnomusicology minor is designed for students who wish to augment their major program with a group of related courses that provide a systematic introduction to the study of world music and performance. The minor is a sequence of two quarters of the same lower-division performance course (ETHNMUS 91A-91Z), along with six academic courses, of which one is a lower-division course in Ethnomusicology (5 or M25); one must be selected from a group of foundational courses in Ethnomusicology, one must be ETHNMUS 101, and three must be upper-division electives in Ethnomusicology. Three upper-division performance courses are also required (selected from 161A-161Z).
Iranian Music Minor
(Please note: link will only work between Week 1 and Week 4 of Fall and Spring quarters.) The Iranian Music minor is designed for students who wish to augment their major program with a group of related courses that provide a systematic introduction to the study of Iranian music, performance, and culture. The minor has both academic and performance classes. It is a sequence of three lower-division courses (11 units): ETHNMUS 5 or M25, 8, and 91L; and six upper-division courses (20 units): ETHNMUS 101, 144, 145 or 163, and 161L ( ETHNMUS 144 and 161L must each be taken twice).
Music Industry Minor
(Please note: link will only work between Week 1 and Week 4 of Fall and Spring quarters.) The Music Industry Minor helps prepare UCLA students for employment in the music industry. Signature requirements are an introductory course in the fundamentals of music business, and a culminating internship supervised by the Center for Community Engagement. Students then choose 6-7 courses from the expansive music industry curriculum at UCLA, including courses in songwriting and production, entrepreneurship, digital marketing, music supervision, forensic musicology, music and data science, the global music industry, and more. Minors may also elect courses that emphasize social justice and activism, a special focus of the program.
Musicology Minor
(Please note: link will only work between Week 1 and Week 4 of Fall and Spring quarters.) The Musicology minor is designed for students who seek to combine the humanistic study of music with a major concentration in another area. The minor is a sequence of seven academic courses, of which two must be lower division or GE courses in Musicology, two must be upper division courses in Musicology, and three more can be chosen from selected upper division offerings in Ethnomusicology, Music, and Musicology. There is no performance requirement for the Musicology minor.
How to Double Major
As a current UCLA student, you do not need to reapply to UCLA formally to double major. However, the School of Music does require that all students complete all steps of our supplemental application, which is due each Fall in early December.
Steps to Double Major
Step 1: In order to apply to add a major at the School of Music or to switch to one of our majors, you are required to complete our supplemental application when they go live in October of Fall quarter. Find all of our supplemental application requirements here.
Step 2: After your application is reviewed by faculty in early December, you will be notified if you are invited to audition or interview for the program. Auditions and interviews take place in late January/early February of each year.
Step 3: If you are accepted to the major, you would be required to complete the requirements for the degree within your allotted time at UCLA. Please note that the School rarely approves extensions of time to complete our degrees, and you would need to demonstrate that you can complete all requirements within your remaining time at UCLA.
