Lore of Gagaku: Textiles and Notation Books

Gagaku, the music of the Japanese Imperial Court has a rich lore surrounding it. Two important aspect of this are the robes used by the dancers and musicians which follow the tradition of court robes of the Heian Period and the copy books of music notation which the musicians created as a memory aid.

UCLA Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band

The UCLA Symphonic Band opens the concert with a selection of favorites from the wind band repertoire. The UCLA Wind Ensemble follows with a program including works from the film Dancer in the Dark, Timothy Mahr’s Fantasia in G, Frank Ticheli’s Blue Shades, and Music for Prague by Karel Husa, a powerful four-movement work that became a kind of instant classic, enjoying more than 7,000 performances to date.

Mirāsīs: Hidden Custodians of Hindustani Music

Lecture on Mirāsīs, who are low caste Muslim accompanist musicians. Stigmatized by colonialists for being associated with courtesan performers, they have been discriminated against and marginalized within their own religion and society. However, adaptive and innovative strategies enabled Mirāsīs to dominate Hindustani music for much of the 20th century.
