During WWI, The Royal Prussian Phonographic Commission recorded the voices of detainees from various backgrounds captive in Prussian camps. Some of these prisoners of war were Armenian soldiers fighting in the Russian army. By examining the sound recordings and printed documents kept in the archives, Melissa Bilal will critically discuss the legacy of the Armenian repertoire produced in internment camps.
Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania, Mary Caldwell, explores the phenomenon of songs lacking notation yet made musical by means of the process of contrafacture; where new lyrics are fashioned after the poetic structure of a preexistent song, thereby allowing his work to be sung to that earlier melody.
As a lead up to the evening concert presentation “‘And You Know Who I Am’: Paul Robeson in Concert”, this afternoon “author meets critics” session is a discussion of Dr. Shana L. Redmond’s newly released second monograph, Everything Man: The Form and Function of Paul Robeson (Duke UP, 2020).
