The UCLA Wind Ensemble opens its 2018–19 season by continuing its yearlong centenary celebration of American musician Leonard Bernstein, performing transcriptions of music from his two most famous Broadway shows, CANDIDE (1956) and WEST SIDE STORY (1957).
Judah Cohen, widely published scholar of Jewish music, will trace America’s largely unknown role in Jewish musical developments of the nineteenth century. Interwoven with Europe’s musical development, the United States during this time made meaningful contributions to the rise of the professional cantor, the development of congregational singing, and the very creation of what we know today as “Jewish music.”
Nominated for its third Grammy in 2016, the ARC Ensemble presents a concert of music featuring the work of a Jewish composer from Czechoslovakia, Walter Kaufmann, who fled to Bombay with the rise of National Socialism. The discovery of his concert-works and Kaufmann’s extraordinary life are the touchstones of this event.

Saxophonist McCoy Mrubata and pianist Paul Hanmer stand as two of the most important and influential musicians in South African jazz today. Drawing from their own compositions, as well as South African jazz standards of the past 50 years, McCoy and Paul provide an incredible glimpse into one of the world’s most fascinating and creative jazz cultures.
On the afternoon of 29 November, we will present a symposium featuring Álvaro Torrente, professor at the Universidad complutense de Madrid; Barbara Fuchs, professor in the UCLA Departments of English and Spanish & Portuguese, and director of The Comedia in Translation and Performance Working Group; and Elisabeth Le Guin, professor of Musicology at UCLA.
